COME ON, NOT ANOTHER SCI-FI/WESTERN HYBRID TV SERIES!

In order to see the movie Serenity when it opens (which I'll be doing because, y'know, I'm trying to see everything), I took it upon myself to first watch the series Firefly. And although I shall reserve judgment until I see all 14 episodes, I wanted to weigh in very briefly on the pilot.

In a nutshell: the sci-fi parts are good, the western parts are decent, the blend is distracting. And it felt very "piloty" - damn near every exchange or incident was clearly meant to Establish Plot and Setting.

One fucking major achievement though - the show makes it clear that there's no sound in a vacuum. Which is by itself enough to get me to watch another episode or two.

And for those who know my opinion of creator Joss Whedon's other work - the 90 minutes of Firefly I've seen are better than pretty much every frame of Buffy I made it through before I gave up on that series.

  1. FYI, Joss Whedon has explicitly stated that his objects in space will not make sounds (and, hey, I worked an episode title into that).

And out of curiosity, if you felt "Serenity" too piloty, do you feel FOX was right in not airing it until after "The Train Job"?

  2. I can't really comment on that, as I have not seen "The Train Job" yet, but it was probably a mistake - especially given the way that Sean Maher and Ron Glass are treated. I can imagine it would be very trying for someone to make it through the first half of "Serenity" if they'd already seen a chunk of episodes.

Just a few rules so that everybody can have fun: ad hominem attacks on the blogger are fair; ad hominem attacks on other commenters will be deleted. And I will absolutely not stand for anything that is, in my judgment, demeaning, insulting or hateful to any gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or religion. And though I won't insist on keeping politics out, let's think long and hard before we say anything particularly inflammatory.

Also, sorry about the whole "must be a registered user" thing, but I do deeply hate to get spam, and I refuse to take on the totalitarian mantle of moderating comments, and I am much too lazy to try to migrate over to a better comments system than the one that comes pre-loaded with Blogger.
