WHAT. THE. FUCK?

For the first time since 1943, there are going to be ten films nominated for the Best Picture Oscar this year. You may now commence furrowing your brow in confusion and, if you like, vague disgust.

  1. Okay, let me get this straight. The usual protocol: nominate five films, not even necessarily the best five of that given year, then give the gong to the most banal of the bunch.

Now they're extending it to ten.

Can't wait to see what hitherto unexplored depths of banality get awarded this time around. "And the winner is ... Year One." Just pass me the frickin' razor blades.

  2. Is this in response to the backlash of The Dark Knight not getting a nomination? Great. Now a nomination is cheapened even more. I'll bet anything this is an attempt to get more viewers because with more nominations they can still offer up their pseudo-art noms mixed with five more commercially friendly pictures to lure viewers in to see if Harry Potter 6 really does have a chance to win. Bleh. Adds nothing to an already boring and obsolete exercise.

  3. I read that in 1935, there were 12 nominees..

  4. Pretty weird, but really, what does it matter? The Oscars have NEVER been anything but Hollywood having a big ol' circlejerk. We all know this, don't we? So why are we meant to care what they think?

  5. Just Best Picture? Or all of it?

Maybe with ten nominees, the five best-shot films will get nominated for Best Cinematography...

  6. This reminds me of when Bette Davis did not get a nomination for Of Human Bondage. There was so much outrage that the Academy was forced into allowing write-in votes alongside the official ballots (not that it helped her win). Kevin is correct: there was similar outrage when The Dark Knight was NOT nominated that now the Academy will have TEN Best Picture nominees. I would tell the Academy "be careful what you wish for". While having ten nominees opens up the field, you may be giving a lesser film the top prize. History repeats itself: more nominees allows for another The Great Ziegfeld or The Greatest Show on Earth to win. It won't last...I hope.

  7. Will: it's just Best Picture... if they were all expanded to ten, the show would be literally twice the length it is now, and haven't they in recent years been trying to make it shorter?

i cringe in terror at the thought of 10 Best Animated Feature nominees.

Just a few rules so that everybody can have fun: ad hominem attacks on the blogger are fair; ad hominem attacks on other commenters will be deleted. And I will absolutely not stand for anything that is, in my judgment, demeaning, insulting or hateful to any gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or religion. And though I won't insist on keeping politics out, let's think long and hard before we say anything particularly inflammatory.

Also, sorry about the whole "must be a registered user" thing, but I do deeply hate to get spam, and I refuse to take on the totalitarian mantle of moderating comments, and I am much too lazy to try to migrate over to a better comments system than the one that comes pre-loaded with Blogger.
