ONE DAY CLOSER TO DEATH
Today is my 28th birthday, and I got to open a present early, at midnight to be precise: James Cameron's stunning visual masterpiece (and narrative... ah, fuck it, who needs a narrative?) Avatar. Which I will be reviewing in due course, but not until I've addressed his last spectacularly expensive technical gobsmacker. Stay tuned.
Anyway, it's my birthday, as I said, which is of course a desperate plea to have people express their love for me in comments.

Just a few rules so that everybody can have fun: ad hominem attacks on the blogger are fair; ad hominem attacks on other commenters will be deleted. And I will absolutely not stand for anything that is, in my judgment, demeaning, insulting or hateful to any gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or religion. And though I won't insist on keeping politics out, let's think long and hard before we say anything particularly inflammatory.
Also, sorry about the whole "must be a registered user" thing, but I do deeply hate to get spam, and I refuse to take on the totalitarian mantle of moderating comments, and I am much too lazy to try to migrate over to a better comments system than the one that comes pre-loaded with Blogger.
Ah, so you've seen Avatar?
ReplyDeleteCould you possibly offer us a hint of your score? From the way you described the movie, it sounds like a...9/10?
Happy birthday!
And express my love I shall.
ReplyDeleteI found your blog this past summer by somehow stumbling across your review of In Bruges and I've been reading it ever since, not to mention delving back into the archives. So, it being your birthday and all, I figure it's about time that I let you know how incredible I think this blog is. Which is to say, absolutely incredible. We sometimes disagree, but every time we do your reviews always give me something to think about. And the Disney reviews were brilliant. They sent me into a month-long regression back to childhood, which was a wonderful thing.
So thanks Tim. Happy birthday, and keep it up.
I don't know whether you spotted my ping on Twitter a while back but I accidentally wrote most of a blog post about you recently, so, happy birthday?
ReplyDeleteReally though, I hope your day is fantastic.
Love, love.
ReplyDeleteI had the exact same thing. I skipped class yesterday to watch Titanic and I STILL didn't finish it before I had to leave for Avatar (the only IMAX 3D theater is two hours away). Now I feel like I'm cheating.
Speaking of Titanic, I'm curious to read Tim's review. It's one of my favorite films of all time, and one of Cameron's best pieces of work. However, I seem to recall reading on this blog that Tim didn't care for it too much.
ReplyDelete*showers with love*
ReplyDeleteTim, I've loved your blog ever since I found the review of "I Know Who Killed Me", and spent the next week in an orgy of reading. I love your writing, I love your opinions, and you teach me something about the medium I love every day. Happy birthday and thanks so much, keep it up!
Your reviews are well-informed and well-written, and I've been coming here everyday since around Beauty and the Beast. Keep up the good work, sir, and have a Happy Nine-Months-Since-Conception Day.
ReplyDeleteAnd from the sound of it, I'm guess you think Avatar can only be enjoyed if one ignores the story..... like Final Fantasy?
More like Riven than Final Fantasy, actually. But I'll get into that...
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm leaning towards 8/10, but if I get sufficiently hopped-up while writing, I can see it drifting up to 9.
I meant Final Fantasy, the movie (either of them, actually). The games are (were?) quite narratively rich.
ReplyDeleteOh, I figured, but I decided to play around with your words a little bit.
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday!
ReplyDeleteI've been reading your blog for a year or two, though obviously I only just started to comment. I found your blog when someone linked to your review of Saw II, and was utterly thrilled to find someone who hated that movie for the same reasons I do, and yet still loved the horror genre. You have excellent taste in movies (but which I mean, similar to mine), and an outstanding knowledge of pretty much everything related to film.
Love for you expressed.
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday Tim! I have to agree with several other comments saying that they stumbled upon your blog once, only to spend the next week delving into all of your archives. I am definitely one of those people. I check your blog every day and yes, we do disagree sometimes, but I am always entertained and enlightened with your posts.
ReplyDeleteAs for all your retrospectives? Brilliant. Very excited for your up and coming GWTW review as it has been my favourite movie since I was 5.
So, again, happy birthday!! I hope it's lovely and I am very much anticipating your Avatar review :)
Tim--You're great to read, great to collaborate with, and great to hang out with. Glad that all three will presumably keep happening.
ReplyDelete(By the way, have you seen early reviews of Nine? Ouch.)
Happy Birthday! So excited for the Avatar review. Love, love your writing.
ReplyDeleteMany happy returns, Tim, but at 28 knock off the "one day closer to death" bit, eh? I'm 37 and a lot closer!
ReplyDeleteDamn, that's the second time I've not picked up on the joke.
ReplyDeleteI sent you a birthday message, though it seems you haven't gotten it yet. So I'll shout HAPPY BIRTHDAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!!!!!!!! from here and hope you hear me.
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday from another stranger who adores your writing. You are by far one of the best movie writers on the internet. You're always insightful, frequently funny, and a hell of a lot of fun to read too. I wish you many happy days.
ReplyDeleteAlso, what happened to the Pakula retrospective? Can I just go ahead and assume that it's dead and buried?
More like Riven than Final Fantasy, but I'll get to that...
ReplyDeleteWow, the first reviewer to knuckle down and compare Avatar to the Myst games, which I so loved as a kid. Looking forward to your review! =)
Come on guys, everyone knows Final Fantasy IX is the best game ever made.
ReplyDeleteThe weird scratchy voice mail is mine, buddy. Happy birthday.
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday, to a great new friend and a totally inspiring, hilarious, thoughtful, informed, and humbling film writer. Looking forward to celebrating sometime soon...
ReplyDelete28. Yay.
ReplyDeleteLove the blog or I wouldn't have tipped, and am constantly amazed at how much we agree on nearly everything, aside from your gore love.
Slightly belated happy birthday! Avatar is certainly a good birthday present. Much better than the one I got at midnight three days ago as inevitably killed some of the brain cells required to comprehend this blog celebrating my 21st.
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday, Tim!
ReplyDeleteYours is the only movie review resource I read every day. Even though I don't agree with your verdicts all the time, your writing is the best and most entertaining on the subject in the whole wide web.
Best wishes from Bonn, Germany!
Happy Birthday! Keep up the good work.
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday Tim!
ReplyDeleteWhat would movie reviewing be without you? Well, we wouldn't know what we'd be missing, so... ;)
Mine was the 15th, just the day after I read the kind words you directed at me, which I took as birthday present. So I had to chime in now, although I'm a couple days late.
I am a bit late in offering my own birthday wishes, but when you reach my age, you tend to forget things. Did I mention I turned twenty-nine this month? There's something to look forward to.
ReplyDeleteIn any case, Mr. Tim, it's always fun reading your comments. We don't always agree, but you're witty and funny and quite insightful. I hope to keep reading your views & wish you all the best for this upcoming year.
