TIM AT TFE: CINEMATIC LANGUAGE

This week's essay at The Film Experience: some thoughts on what it means to watch foreign-language films, as inspired by the release of the English-language version of the Norwegian-language Kon-Tiki.

  1. A really thought-provoking column this week. As someone who watches a lot of anime it's something I contend with pretty often. I've found that often the best option is fan-translated subtitles, which tend to hew closer to the spirit than the letter of the original, whereas officially licensed DVDs tend to go for a more literal translation.

Also, which Godzilla films would you consider to be the really good ones? I just got the Criterion BRD of the original film and I wouldn't mind checking out some of the sequels but I'm not sure I have the patience to go through all of them.

  2. The fansubs I used when I saw Paranoia Agent the first time certainly contributed hugely to my appreciation of that series, I'll say that much.

Godzilla-wise: the '54 original and Godzilla vs. Mothra are easily the two best. I'm fonder of Godzilla 1985 than I think is typical, and I think it's safe to check out anything with King Ghidorah in it. Giant Monsters All-Out Attack is pretty great, but it's certainly not a gateway film. I'm due to revisit the '70s movies.

Just a few rules so that everybody can have fun: ad hominem attacks on the blogger are fair; ad hominem attacks on other commenters will be deleted. And I will absolutely not stand for anything that is, in my judgment, demeaning, insulting or hateful to any gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or religion. And though I won't insist on keeping politics out, let's think long and hard before we say anything particularly inflammatory.

Also, sorry about the whole "must be a registered user" thing, but I do deeply hate to get spam, and I refuse to take on the totalitarian mantle of moderating comments, and I am much too lazy to try to migrate over to a better comments system than the one that comes pre-loaded with Blogger.
