GET ARRESTED
Are you watching the new episodes of Arrested Development on Netflix right now? Because you could be. If you live in North America, and are a Netflix subscriber.
I'm not, at least not at the stroke of 12:01 AM, PDT, as the episodes go live. After much consideration and calculating, I've decided to break the 15 episodes into five three-episode chunks, that I'll get to over the next couple of days. I'll have thoughts to share sometime in the middle of the week, then, and in the meantime this can be a space for anybody who wants to say anything they like; but please, if you're going to give away anything specific, throw the word "SPOILER" up there for the rest of us.

Just a few rules so that everybody can have fun: ad hominem attacks on the blogger are fair; ad hominem attacks on other commenters will be deleted. And I will absolutely not stand for anything that is, in my judgment, demeaning, insulting or hateful to any gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or religion. And though I won't insist on keeping politics out, let's think long and hard before we say anything particularly inflammatory.
Also, sorry about the whole "must be a registered user" thing, but I do deeply hate to get spam, and I refuse to take on the totalitarian mantle of moderating comments, and I am much too lazy to try to migrate over to a better comments system than the one that comes pre-loaded with Blogger.
I've watched the first two and a half episodes but on the west coast it's 2:47 am and I just can't stay up any longer. Let me just say, the second episode features some of Jeffrey Tambor's best acting in the entire run of the series (it's one of my favourite episodes the show's ever done). And Tobias Funke is in top form. Judging from what I've seen so far the 4 season is off to a grand start.
ReplyDeleteI'm on the GOB episode, and it's the first one that I think is up there with the best of the original series.
ReplyDeleteGotten to episode 9. It's a bit scattershot at first but around episode 7 everything starts coalescing and we enter classic AD territory. I'm sure repeat viewings will make the first part of the season that much more hilarious because there's so many call backs and flash forwards going on that don't really make sense until later in the season.
ReplyDeleteThat makes three votes for episode 7 / GOB #1 as the point where it starts to gel. Though I am still only one episode past that, myself.
ReplyDelete1/3 of the way through, so far my take is that it's a bit messy and undisciplined, but still very funny and mostly working. Excited to get to Gob's episode...
ReplyDeleteThe back half of the season is delivering huge. Some of the best stuff they've ever done.
ReplyDeleteI just finished all of it this evening. I agree that it got off to a slow and somewhat disjointed start but it all started to convalesce near the midway point and the last half swung between good and great.
ReplyDeleteI do hope we'll hear more of your opinions about it in the comings weeks though, Tim.
No doubt at all, I'm going to have thoughts to share, but now that I've finished it, I need to live with it a little while. I'd intended to write something tonight, but I think I want to revisit the first six episodes, at least.
ReplyDeleteSome really complicated stuff in there.
