SUMMER OF BLOOD: READERS' CHOICE!

Let's try this again and actually have the comments open this time around!

We're still working on the poll for Week 4, with a review to follow on Saturday, but it never hurts to start planning ahead-

And for Week 5, the one-third mark of these year's Choose Your Own Summer of Blood, I'm going to really go ahead and open the floodgates. It's going to be a straight-up reader's choice free-for-all, so now's your chance if you've been itching to hear my thoughts on some horror movie or another.

In an attempt to keep this from descending into total anarchy, here are the rules:

1. Only one title can be nominated per Google/Blogger profile.

2. In addition to the title, copy+paste the IMDb link, though I won't ask anyone to noodle with the HTML to actually make the link live.

3. Please, make sure I haven't already reviewed it. If you submit a nomination for a film that I've reviewed, I'll discard it. That goes out to you, anonymous individual who has cast a write-in vote for The Pit in every poll so far. Unless you mean a different The Pit, in which case I apologise, and also see Rule #2.

4. I will also discard any title I have planned for a future poll in this year's Summer of Blood. Don't feel bad - it'll have a better chance of winning later rather than now.

5. I'm going to allow a fairly free definition of horror, not limited by any particular subgenre. That said, if anyone throws out a clear joke title - that goes out to you, anonymous invididual who wrote in Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked in Week 1, and by the way, I literally laughed out loud when I saw that - I'll probably discard that too.

In case there ends up being an unmanageable number of nominees - I'll know what that threshold is when I see it - the voting might end up being different than in other weeks. And just so everybody knows, we'll be doing this again before the summer is out.

You have 48 hours - until 12:30 PM Central Daylight Time (GMT -5:00) on Saturday, 14 June. Use the comments to this post to make your nominations!

I saw this movie as a wee lad and was left traumatized for years. Even today I have a severely unhealthy fear and fascination of alien abduction. The sequence inside the ship (with ILM effects) still holds up.

    But you knew that already.

    1. I agree, let's go with Candyman! This is my ten year old dsughter's current favorite movie by the way. Does this make me a bad parent I exposed it to her so early ..?

  6. My first thought, no joke, was The Shining, but for obvious reasons I'm going to strike that in favour of John Carpenter's The Thing.

  13. YOU... MUST... REVIEW... "HOUSE"

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0076162/

And I mean the 1977 Japanese film. I can't describe how much I still want you to review this. There is no other film like it on earth.

  14. Gonna throw out "Thr3e". Reading Tim tearing apart poorly made fundamentalist Christian movies is always a delight and the idea of him taking on poorly made fundamentalist Christian torture porn is too much to resist.

  22. Tsui Hark's The Butterfly Murders

Basically, imagine a wuxia restaging of THE BIRDS (only with butterflies) that also manages to be a giallo, shot as near to Lucio Fulci's style as I've ever seen any other film-maker approach.

  23. What an opportunity! I thought about going super obscure, but instead I'll play it somewhat safe and nominate a movie I've wanted to hear your thoughts on for some time, Lucky McKee's excellent debut May.

  26. Some many great choices already.
@David Greenwood, House is excellent alright. Any of the above choices are great: Beyond the Black Rainbow would have been mine. The 2001 of Slaasher films.
I nominate a little seen classic: The Old Dark House

Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon. The best slasher film of the 21st century to date, and one of the five best ever, period. It's everything insane Scream fanboys claim that movie was.

  30. I've been holding out for Tim's review of John Carpenter's The Thing for a long time now, but since Not Fenimore beat me to it, I'll suggest "May" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0303361/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1

  31. Wow, some really great suggestions so far! I'd be happy with just about any of them, so I'll throw in a bit of a curveball and submit Spielberg's "War of the Worlds"-

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0407304/?ref_=nv_sr_1

Tim has mentioned it a couple of times over the years, and I've been dying for a full review. Only nominally science fiction, it's a grinding nightmare of non-stop horror, and my favorite Spielberg movie in many years.

  32. One day I think your blog could benefit from a review of Se7en (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0114369/) but right now I'm hoping for some crazy thing I've never heard of. House and Black Rainbow look intriguing!

  33. @Rick - Just as an aside, when I was at uni studying HG Wells, I made the case in class that Spielberg's War of the Worlds is the scariest film ever to receive the UK's 12A certificate. It's a position I stand by.

  34. Looks to me like three votes so far for BtBR! :)

  35. I wanted to see Tim tear apart Stephen King's It, but I decided to throw in one I've been asking for since I started reading this blog: Zack Snyder's Dawn of the Dead.

Although I'm gonna have to YouTube that girl getting eaten by a piano bit.

  36. Since you're already doing an Italian horror this week, I'll hold back on offering something by Fulci or Soavi. I really like the idea of your reviewing The Thing as a few others have suggested; however, I think I'd really like to see you cover Werner Herzog's Nosferatu: Phantom der Nacht.

  39. I somewhat want to nominate "The Devil's Rain" - Ernest Borgnine, William Shatner Tom Skerritt, and John Travolta, in a movie where satanists have the power to melt people...but it is more boring than it sounds.

Instead, I'll go with "House of Wax" (2005 version) with Elisha Cuthbert and Paris Hilton; so glorious in its awfulness. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0397065/

"HOUSE IS CALLING YOU... COME BACK AND MARRY ME"

  41. Ha! "The Devil's Rain". Yeah, it's not as fun as it sounds, but it does have maybe the most grammatically nonsensical tagline I've ever heard:

"Heaven Help Us All When The Devil's Rain!"

  44. Hi, long time lurker, first time commenting. I'd love to read what you think of "Rosemary's Baby", considering you're not a big fan of religious horror.
