SUMMER OF BLOOD, WEEK 4 POLL: GIALLI

VOTING CLOSED - WINNER: THE PERFUME OF THE LADY IN BLACK
Thanks to everyone who voted!

Of all the various sub-groups of horror cinema, the one nearest to my heart is the Italian giallo of the 1960s and '70s. Style-over-everything murder mysteries drenched in sex, atmosphere, and color, the films are among the most distinctive and memorable in all of genre film. For this week's film, I've selected a spread of films that represent the gialli at their classiest and their most irredeemably crude; I will trust that you don't need more than the titles to figure out which is the latter.

The Night Evelyn Came Out of the Grave (1971)
From IMDb: "A wealthy pervert lures beautiful young women to his castle so he can have his way with them."

The Perfume of the Lady in Black (1974)
From IMDb: "Sylvia, an industrial scientist, is troubled by strange hallucinations related to the tragic suicide of her mother."

Strip Nude for Your Killer (1975)
From IMDb: "When a fashion model dies during an abortion, a series of murders begins, starting with her doctor."

  1. If Catwoman taught me anything, it's that cosmetics make for a great plot point.

  2. There's a clear winner for best title here - the Night Evelyn came out of Her Grave gets my vote.

  3. By the "most irredeemably tasteless synopsis" criterion, STRIP NUDE FOR YOUR KILLER is the winner.

  4. Strip Nude For Your Killer is just a pervy European soft core flick but Perfume of The Lady in Black is a great, great horror flick. Strip Nude will most likely win given the title and the content but Tim should review Perfume regardless at some point. I just watched Strip Nude last week and will attest there's some good kills and unintentional comedy so it's also a great choice. The Night Evelyn Came Out of the Grave is for Giallo enthusiasts only.

  5. Gialli! Bellissima! But how does one choose between three titles and synopses like THAT?

I'll go with Perfume of the Lady in Black, since everything I've heard about Strip Nude for your Killer is that it's a shitty soft-core flick that happens to also be a giallo. FUCKING amazing title though.

  6. I always like reading Tim gush about giallo that focus heavily on psychedelia, so my vote's going with The Perfume of the Lady in Black, the most phantasmagorical-sounding one, based on description.

  7. I implore you all, fellow readers, to vote for The Perfume of the Lady in Black. It is truly one of the best of the pre-Suspiria Italian horror films. I really hope this wins.

  8. I voted for Evelyn, but I'd be happy with Lady too. Let's... not do Strip.

  9. Um, Tim?

I'd very much like to nominate a movie for the new week 5 poll, but the comments on that post don't seem to be enabled. :P

  10. There's a long-winded explanation for how that happened, or we could just go with "Tim was being an epic dumbass" and move on.

Just a few rules so that everybody can have fun: ad hominem attacks on the blogger are fair; ad hominem attacks on other commenters will be deleted. And I will absolutely not stand for anything that is, in my judgment, demeaning, insulting or hateful to any gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or religion. And though I won't insist on keeping politics out, let's think long and hard before we say anything particularly inflammatory.

Also, sorry about the whole "must be a registered user" thing, but I do deeply hate to get spam, and I refuse to take on the totalitarian mantle of moderating comments, and I am much too lazy to try to migrate over to a better comments system than the one that comes pre-loaded with Blogger.
