WHAT I'VE BEEN UP TO
I'll be back to providing content here at good ol' Antagony & Ecstasy soon - later today, and multiple reviews - but in the meantime, I wanted to share with my regular readers the things I've been writing elsewhere that have been partially responsible for the recent slowdown, in particular because one of the essays is a review of one of the best classic movies I've seen all year, and one is for a newly-released foreign film that I think at least some of you might want to hear about.
Wim Wenders' Alice in the Cities reviewed for the UW Cinematheque Blog
Kim Jee-woon's The Age of Shadows reviewed for The Film Experience
And check back at Film Experience later tonight for a short essay on a bit of classical Hollywood horror that I'm particularly happy with.

Just a few rules so that everybody can have fun: ad hominem attacks on the blogger are fair; ad hominem attacks on other commenters will be deleted. And I will absolutely not stand for anything that is, in my judgment, demeaning, insulting or hateful to any gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or religion. And though I won't insist on keeping politics out, let's think long and hard before we say anything particularly inflammatory.
Also, sorry about the whole "must be a registered user" thing, but I do deeply hate to get spam, and I refuse to take on the totalitarian mantle of moderating comments, and I am much too lazy to try to migrate over to a better comments system than the one that comes pre-loaded with Blogger.
Interestingly, Korea's other film that was under consideration for their Oscar submission was also about Korea's occupation under Japan.
ReplyDeleteConsidering the veneration for Park Chan-wook and the rapturous reviews it got in Cannes, everybody is a little surprised "The Handmaiden" wasn't the official selection -- but here's hoping Tim gets to reviewing that one soon ;)

ReplyDeleteI was kind of hoping/expecting The Handmaiden to get that official selection status, but when The Age of Shadows was announced, I wasn't really surprised. Kim Ji-woon is not as beloved as Park Chan-wook, but he's still got that love. Song Kang-ho is in like 90% of the South Korean films I've seen to the point that I'm actually pretty shocked he's not as or more internationally famous than Lee Byung-hun. The Oscars are still remarkably and shamefully icky about homosexual content, ESPECIALLY lesbian content (That infuriating Carol snub). But the big one that makes me unsurprised is the fact that The Age of Shadows is actually a Warner Bros. production. It figures a major US-based film company would try to influence its way to receiving as many Oscars as it can.
I'm honestly more excited for The Handmaiden than The Age of Shadows which recently had a release here in Miami I missed because I just found out it existed by accident.
There's a real possibility that The Handmaiden will be the very next movie I see in a theater if I can ever shake this damn cold. Have no fear, it will be getting a review, and within not too many days.
