I just love every thing about this one. The heroine, the message, the animation style, the songs (I'll make a man out of you) and the comedy. To me it's the funnyest Disney films when it comes down to comedy and I don't mind Mushu (maybe becose I'm from Poland I proably don't get how 80's his lines are... BTW-> They actually got Polish comedy legend Jerzy Sztur to be the voice of Mushu in Polish dubb and he did such fantastic job they also got him to do the donkey in "Shrek").

I can't help it, It's the one Disney film I can watch over and over agian the most but at the same time I see most of the problems people have with this one.

Yours
Maciek Kur/Pan Milus

P.S. I was going for the joke, in the "he's so gay that it's the one thing everybody knows about him, so I'll pretend that I don't know that he's gay" way.

Meg: I dearly wish there was more of Shan Yu in this movie. The scene you reference is outstanding; I also love his casual evilness in the opening.Timhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09491952893581644049noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14812333.post-46981862511136661712009-12-04T12:07:37.044-06:002009-12-04T12:07:37.044-06:00Yes, I was nine. And the fact that Mulan was eleven years ago makes me feel old, geez, where does the time go?

Even if you're not a woman, you're entitled to your opinion on these matters. Like Mr Roivas said, there are some feminists who will argue just about anything is anti-feminist. I mean, I've made some pretty ridiculous feminist arguments in the past for academic purposes.

Also, I thought I'd add that, even though you didn't talk about him that much, Shan Yu was, for me, the most terrifying Disney villain in existence. He still scares me. I think it's the part where the Huns pop up out of the snow.Meganhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14872907965389104215noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14812333.post-74161588853741505002009-12-04T10:50:11.382-06:002009-12-04T10:50:11.382-06:00Harvey Fierstein is gay (in another bit of animati...Harvey Fierstein is gay (in another bit of animation type-casting, he played Homer's assistant Carl in an oooooold episode of the Simpsons, Simpson and Delilah, from Season 2, I believ), which I think qualifies for the meta-textual import you were looking for.Benjaminhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14709333325776591295noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14812333.post-91256895066960684782009-12-03T22:56:00.682-06:002009-12-03T22:56:00.682-06:00Some feminist authors also think that all sex betw...Some feminist authors also think that all sex between males and females is coercive, and therefore rape. I am a feminist male, and I feel no need to give that particular view the benefit of the doubt. To have the movie be completely free of anti-feminist messages would make it inauthentic as a portrayal of the culture and of the time. IMHO, you have no need to dither on this issue.

As for the review... yeah, for the most part I agree. I liked Mulan as a character, thought that the side characters were used well for the most part. I always enjoy the movie... until the dragon shows up. Then I always start wondering "What the **** is Eddie Murphy doing in ancient China?" Ah well. It still remains one of my favorite Disney movies, despite it all.MrRoivashttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12018731012247569416noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14812333.post-20608958033724934372009-12-03T22:42:09.600-06:002009-12-03T22:42:09.600-06:00Oh gawd, you were nine? I hated him even as a nine year old girl. of course, then I didn't know why, just that there was something about him that didn't fit, and he just wasn't funny. I had kind of erased him from my memory until I watched the movie a few weeks ago and wished I could go back to not remembering.

As for the feminist aspects of the film, I never found it to be particularly anti-feminist, as I saw the... less than progressive parts a reflection of (what I'm sure is a simplified portrayal) Chinese culture of the time period. I find it hard to fault Mulan for wanting to run off to save her father. I believe you said something to the effect of, "If Belle's anti-feminist for it's really just falling in love with a man that's anti-feminist," and I saw Mulan the same way. Mulan's love for her father isn't necessarily a reenforcement of patriarchy. Plus, the movie doesn't end with a wedding, but with Shang staying for dinner. I mean, it's not perfect, but when I was nine, Mulan made me think I could do whatever I wanted -- go off to war and save the country if I wanted to. And that's better, in my estimation, than telling young girls, "You, too, can marry a prince!"Meganhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14872907965389104215noreply@blogger.com
