His collaboration with Takahata on the two Panda Kopanda shorts is a very clear precursor--with a cute little girl, a great big round animal she befriends, and a little version of the animal along for the ride. The first one just feels overly cute and kidsy to me, but the second one has some very pretty water animation that clearly presages Ponyo.

We should also remember that Miyazaki had worked on a lot of animated movies and tv shows by this point, including things like Puss in Boots and Animal Treasure Island which are very child oriented, but especially on the Takahata-directed series Heidi, Girl of the Alps, and its two successors 3000 Leagues in Search of Mother, and Anne of Green Gables. Miyazaki did all the layouts for the these series, which include a great deal of gentle basking in nature, gradually developing plots, and delightful childish growth through play. These series were shown around the world, but unfortunately not in America, so if you want to find anything about them you have to resort to the fansub community.StephenMhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16588260639227694557noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14812333.post-90713652772555948662011-06-21T00:41:32.244-05:002011-06-21T00:41:32.244-05:00Just wanted to say that after watching this I pick...Just wanted to say that after watching this I picked up some VIAGRA ONLINE and now I'm feeling much better without the almost pissing my pants that was happening before when I saw the Nekobasu.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14812333.post-28872936715724110042010-09-17T08:29:16.394-05:002010-09-17T08:29:16.394-05:00Yeah, I think I'm going to let that one stay o...Yeah, I think I'm going to let that one stay out of respect for its programmers. I was a little bit afraid of it because I had read some reviews in which the lack of any significant plot had been mentioned - but all of my fears disappeared during the movie. Really, I just didn't care about the fact that almost nothing serious happens - it is beautiful and adorable. As you implicitly note, it's a radically different approach to storytelling than you would find in a western animation, and it's stunningly effective. And while there may be almost no conflict, but I tell you, the part where Satsuki snaps and accuses Mei of not caring if their mother dies absolutely kills me every time.GeoX, one of the GeoX boys.https://www.blogger.com/profile/14658452994152399308noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14812333.post-91487652203995532872010-03-18T13:54:58.958-05:002010-03-18T13:54:58.958-05:00I share your shame, Tim; I too have not seen Totor...I share your shame, Tim; I too have not seen Totoro.Stephenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12353384030134127816noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14812333.post-89550077009328416122010-03-18T04:27:47.210-05:002010-03-18T04:27:47.210-05:00A pitch perfect review, Tim, of what is arguably M...A pitch perfect review, Tim, of what is arguably Miyazaki's purest, simplest and most heartfelt film.

Your Miyazaki retrospective is shaping up to be as authoritative and readable as your Disney project.Neil Fulwoodhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14686296295535235988noreply@blogger.com
