Great review.

And adding to others above, I think you should give Batman Beyond (as a series) a chance too. I don't know that I would stand by this now but I used to think it had the best scripts of all the DCAU shows. I thought that the final movie provided some fascinating backstory for the original characters.Wild Bloggerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08243331039670327167noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14812333.post-90038321749801456972012-07-27T18:33:36.867-05:002012-07-27T18:33:36.867-05:00It's interesting that practically everyone'...It's interesting that practically everyone's favorite Batman is Kevin Conroy, and I think the reason is that he's the only actor who was cast for how well he can play Batman, rather than being a convincing Bruce Wayne. Christian Bale got to channel Patrick Bateman to good effect in Batman Begins, but once he put on the batsuit and started gargling nails I couldn't help laughing.

Bruce Wayne is not the real character, Batman is. Wayne is essentially his cover story, and he should seem much more comfortable as the Dark Knight. Conroy's portrayal was the best to date because he got this right. He famously decided to use two separate voices for the character, and as Wayne he seems phonily cheerful. One always feels that Batman is who he really is, not just some gig he decided to take up on weekends.David Greenwoodhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03666205737413060006noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14812333.post-41630072102224394252012-07-27T12:33:26.659-05:002012-07-27T12:33:26.659-05:00And hey, look at that; it also passes the Bechdel ...And hey, look at that; it also passes the Bechdel Test.Colinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04952276101161849381noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14812333.post-37578587121729861662012-07-27T12:08:21.958-05:002012-07-27T12:08:21.958-05:00I think the best animated episode of the entire se...I think the best animated episode of the entire series is "Harley and Ivy". It's just so much more expressive and flamboyant and elastic than any of the other episodes. And yet if you watch it with commentary, Bruce Timm, Paul Dini, and Eric Rodomski can't stop bitching about how much the animators went off model with the Joker, adding lines to his face and occasionally strengthening and elongating his jawline. Meanwhile, he's never looked better, or scarier, or more alive. I guess there's just no pleasing some people.Colinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04952276101161849381noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14812333.post-41253943061063628542012-07-26T22:02:37.060-05:002012-07-26T22:02:37.060-05:00I love this film, love TAS, own every season of BT...I love this film, love TAS, own every season of BTAS and Superman TAS.

Unfortunately, I won't really go to bat for the animation. The show looks fantastic in stills, but in motion it was stiff and jerky. Until the new batman adventures when the characters were all redesigned (largely for the better; just look at that Scarecrow!), but the mythology and execution of the show is outstanding.

Perhaps a retrospective of key episodes? Perhaps suggestions from the crowd?Oliverhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04435787187358268362noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14812333.post-83028378002795745992012-07-26T13:37:16.039-05:002012-07-26T13:37:16.039-05:00Not only is "Batman: The Animated Series"...Not only is "Batman: The Animated Series" my favorite Batman, it was my first Batman; I discovered it a year or two before reading my first comic. And "Mask of the Phantasm" remains tied for the position of my number one favorite Batman film with "The Dark Knight Rises" (which I liked better than you did, and better than the first two, but I won't get into that here). The thing I love the most about it is its noirishness, more specifically its sort of Gothic noirishness, so that it reminds one not just of Hitchcock but of "Marnie" and "Rebecca" especially.

And the climax set in the old Gotham City World's Fair, with Batman and the Joker fighting amongst the miniature towers of a model Gotham like Godzilla versus Mothra: has there ever been a more perfect visual metaphor for the way the feud between those two larger-than-life characters has come to consume an entire city?Colinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04952276101161849381noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14812333.post-72655950034174927192012-07-26T12:52:16.525-05:002012-07-26T12:52:16.525-05:00Glad to know there are so many DCAU fans in the ho...Glad to know there are so many DCAU fans in the house!

I can see myself doing some kind of retrospective in the future, and I've been pondering what that might look like. As for this exact moment in time, I'm a little bit Batman'd out - and I'm skipping Return of the Joker on the grounds that I'm only a little bit familiar with Batman Beyond - but I think I can guarantee that something will happen, though I do not know yet what.Timhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09491952893581644049noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14812333.post-69349608658696133992012-07-26T11:12:31.403-05:002012-07-26T11:12:31.403-05:00Yep, the best Batman movie ever and I can't th...Yep, the best Batman movie ever and I can't think of any way to explain it better than you have.

I will only second the idea that I don't mind we spend some time with the other animated Batman's or with the DCAU in general (my god, how good was Justice League).

Hopefully you can at least tackle Return of the Joker and Under the Red Hood; the next two best Batman movies ever.hayleyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01203127598513280855noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14812333.post-76733087279624685492012-07-26T10:36:02.119-05:002012-07-26T10:36:02.119-05:00Oh i wish you could do a DCAU retrospective...Oh i wish you could do a DCAU retrospective...Ben Hatkehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13128090224957401149noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14812333.post-86683581710214330072012-07-26T08:09:41.995-05:002012-07-26T08:09:41.995-05:00As much as I do adore Phantasm, in addition to the...As much as I do adore Phantasm, in addition to the slightly stilted animation I always find the voice acting a little weaker than the best episodes of the series itself. Conroy in particular seemed to be off his game in this one, reaching Bad Shakespeare in the Park levels of over-elevation peaking at his revelatory "OH, NO!" moment in the Batcave at recognizing the Joker's face in the photo.

Then again, that may be more to do with Phantasm's tone reaching for the operatic even more fervently than the series itself, from Walker's redux choral take on Elfman – sends shivers down my spine every time – to the heightened melodrama of the Casablanca moments like that of ****** on the deck of the ship at the finale.

That sort-of-maybe-a-complaint notwithstanding, I fucking love this movie. I'm not sure it would make my list of top 10 TAS episodes if I considered it one for the sake of competition, but that's more a testament to just how spectacular the show was than a crack against Phantasm.

Will you be taking on Mr. Freeze or Return of the Joker?Calebhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18374497545791328382noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14812333.post-76032734640315318712012-07-25T23:27:10.140-05:002012-07-25T23:27:10.140-05:00This will always be my favorite Batman movie and e...This will always be my favorite Batman movie and everyone I show it to is surprised by just how dark and good it is. You are right Tim the animated Batman was the best Batman.

Mark Hamill is also on fire in this movie. His scene with Arthur is classic Joker, both hilarious and creepy as hell at the same time. His joke about the phone being disconnected always makes me laugh too!

I understand that you really cant go further into the show itself, but I feel you should at least think of doing the uncut edition of Return of the Joker to finish off this fantastic batman retrospective!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01560748360235621278noreply@blogger.com
