It's weird, but that distance does make them more lovable in a way. (Even though I like Slacker as much as anybody else, it's that movie's political ramblings [that the movie seems to take at least halfway seriously sometimes] that makes me not really enjoy watching it, whereas I could watch Before Sunrise all day long)

I'm a longtime reader and an only occasional commenter, and so I know that this isn't really my place (and I'm loathe to do any sort of self-promotion usually), but I'm in the midst of my own Richard Linklater retrospective and I'd love to know what you think (I've actually often thought that it would be great if you had some sort of auditing system, where you'd go around to various blogs and tell them if they're being shitty at thinking about movies). Anyways, you can find it over at reviewtimes.net if you're so inclined (it's a couple of pages in right now... I haven't had a whole lot of time for it lately)Mr. Blackwellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08656702134779980724noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14812333.post-15882339622534540252012-09-11T14:51:27.707-05:002012-09-11T14:51:27.707-05:00Really wonderful, insightful review of a favorite ...Really wonderful, insightful review of a favorite film of mine, Tim! It makes me nostaglic to see it again, but like you said, in a way this films work really well as they fade away in your memory, like a young passionate love that you can only hold on to in your mind, and even that is slipping.

Personally, I'd always preferred Before Sunset. It's older, more cynical, but no less captivating. It's more focused on these two and the world of time that's passed between them, without any of the details or distractions of poor poets or funny palm readers. And while the ending to this film IS wonderful(those shots of the places they've been, now empty and just another day are brilliant), I love Sunset's ambiguous finale even more. So much so, that I'm kinda nervous about the idea of a sequel providing some definition to it.

None of this takes away from Sunrise, of course, which is still a lovely film; you may not remember the dialog, but you remember the WAY it was said, and that sticks with you.Jeremyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12219137212221355997noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14812333.post-12319485803051594522012-09-11T09:10:50.396-05:002012-09-11T09:10:50.396-05:00!!! I hadn't heard anything at all about Befor...!!! I hadn't heard anything at all about Before Midnight until now. That really is the best news ever.

I don't have anything particular to say about this movie because you hit pretty much everything that makes me love it - the record store moment, the street poet, those last shots of Vienna in the daylight (and the graveyard scene is a particular favorite as well; I think it's a perfect example of the line between finding the characters pretentious and emotionally engaging with them anyway that you mentioned). If I were at home at the moment I'd watch this again right now.Lucashttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17520552401498998458noreply@blogger.com
