Maybe I need to see this again, but I seem to recall the film laying it out there pretty early on and pretty overtly who the killer was, which kind of makes sense given the whole "wants to be a thriller more than a horror film" vibe it emits. But perhaps I'm mistaken.

I'm with you and everyone else here that the film's languid pace and weird disco detour is its downfall. It has an unmistakable Canadian vibe to it (again, the languid pace and the disco) and, as you wonderfully dissect here, it was released in that oh-so-curious year for the slasher: 1980. Yes, it's boring, but it's essential viewing for fans of the subgenre.

Also, I love this:

"Yet there is something unfathomable about Prom Night, something that has very little to do with quality, and more with some X-factor that it attains largely through circumstances utterly beyond its control or creation."

The fact that it made 13 million more than its budget is weird, too. I guess we chalk that one up to the presence of Curtis because there's really no other explanation why this particular horror movie made that much money in 1980...it has to be Curtis' presence. A bat-shit insane Nightmare on Elm Street rip-off with full-frontal nudity, and starring Michael Ironside? That said, I remember it being as slow as you described and not enjoying it as much as Terror Train for that very reason! Like you I do remember Wendy being pretty entertaining and her school stalk sequence being the highlight of this film. I also remember DISCO! LOTS AND LOTS OF DISCO! It might be time to sit down and revisit this and Terror Train again! But damn Jamie...Slow is definitely the right word.

But damn Jamie Lee Curtis is awesome.

Also, it has a somewhat surprising dearth of nudity for the time/genre, with only, to my recollection, one bare ass showing up.Brianhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04546972990126033036noreply@blogger.com
