Have seen the English '98 and the musical adaptation '12 films.
I thought the films were inspiring except for the ending scene in '98; and the role interpretations of Crowe, Cohen and Carter in '12. So I still haven't been able to enjoy a whole movie of the story that would be more in synch with the substance of the original.
Can you recommend such a film version, even a French one with English subtitles or dubbing?
Thanks ahead Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11348147736211028969noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14812333.post-68981610353004804782015-08-31T00:45:42.517-05:002015-08-31T00:45:42.517-05:00I'm late to this, but thanks for your assessme...I'm late to this, but thanks for your assessment of the awful suicide scene. And I have a noted love of hogwash conspiracy / secret society / ancient Catholic secret stories. I'll cuddle up with From hell and be it's only friend :)David Greenwoodhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03666205737413060006noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14812333.post-12135600407079914532013-01-29T09:57:28.248-06:002013-01-29T09:57:28.248-06:00Now, we must remember that I have not seen the mov...Now, we must remember that I have not seen the movie since it was in theaters over a decade ago, so most of what I remember is my burning disgust, and not the cause of it. But as I recall, my big issues were with the Hughes brothers' flashy, anachronistic style, which tended to cheapen the sense of apocalypse.

And while I had not yet read the graphic novel, and this might fall under "source material" issues, I found that its decision to take the real-life Frederick Abberline and turn him into a psychic detective was the sort of garish distortion of history that really needed to be done with a cheeky sense of humor if it was to be done at all, and it was surely not done with much of a sense of humor. Also, pretty much everything involving his opium addiction felt misjudged in the most spectacular way.

And this is the point were my memory starts to fog up, but I remember thinking that it was largely just a routine murder mystery told without much intrigue or suspense, and all of the stylistic flourishes in the direction and narrative seemed like attempts to compensate for that, rather than an actual expression of style as substance, on the Luhrmann/Tarsem model.Timhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09491952893581644049noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14812333.post-13510188428036764052013-01-28T16:22:34.220-06:002013-01-28T16:22:34.220-06:00I'm sorry for the tangent but...

I'd go so far as to call it one of my favorite movies, and my theory for this disparity is twofold:

1) I never read Alan Moore's original graphic novel, which I could tell by skimming was of a completely different character.

2) I have a noted bias towards mood and assured style over plot coherence (i.e. I'm a Zack Snyder fan). I've been told people think the plot is kind of bollocks, but I weep at how awesome the mood and direction are.

What I'm asking is, as someone whose opinion I trust, what is it about "From Hell" (divorced from the source material) that you find distasteful?David Greenwoodhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03666205737413060006noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14812333.post-89574128128975737082013-01-28T10:17:00.480-06:002013-01-28T10:17:00.480-06:00prestohotel- I'd rank the English versions as:...prestohotel- I'd rank the English versions as:

1935 - 8
2012 - 8
1978 - 7
1998 - 6
1952 - 5

and would completely agree that the Bernard is the best version I've ever seen, though in general, the French adaptations are altogether better than the English ones, which is why...

Chris- I am absolutely going to hit at least the '58, '95, and '00 French adaptations, and the '82 if I can scrounge it up. Not anytime immediately soon: I need to take a break from the story. (Admittedly this is probably his best role)

That ending was awful. I personally prefer Raymond Bernard's version over all of them - Hooper's is at an 8 for me now.
