Very sorry if that was the implication of this review. It definitely acknowledges that they have little but not overriding personality flaws, but the idea that New York hipsters, as a class, have some problematic characteristics is literally nowhere on the film's radar.

Whereas K&S, though it's ultimately forgiving of its characters, definitely understands that a reasonable person might find them totally devoid of redeeming qualities.Timhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09491952893581644049noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14812333.post-33154719735318721322013-06-07T20:46:03.893-05:002013-06-07T20:46:03.893-05:00@Jordan
What I take away from this review - and fr...@Jordan
What I take away from this review - and from many of Tim's other reviews - is not that he's bashing on the movie for having unlikable people, but bashing on the movie for how it represents unlikable people (and is bashing really correct? It's still on the positive side of 6). His comparison to Kicking and Screaming directly addresses this, and I know what he means; if a film can't make the audience forget how unbearable its characters are, or at least hold the characters' feet to the fire, then he has a perfect reason for finding it bad or at least unpleasant in a way that it shouldn't have to be.WBTNhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10723456891272273669noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14812333.post-35702332050649385592013-06-07T19:32:17.349-05:002013-06-07T19:32:17.349-05:00I'm sorry, but I just hate when critics bash o...I'm sorry, but I just hate when critics bash on a film for having unlikable characters. People are unlikable. We deal with clueless, ignorant people like Frances and her friends every day. God forbid we should see a film in which they don't realize how clueless they are. I believe this is very much Baumbach's and Gerwig's point to which they reference in their interview with Terry Gross. I'll never be able to understand people who hate on Rachel Getting Married, Girls, et. al for having rich, unlovable characters. That's what many humans are. And those films and shows interest me far more than any of the sentimental crap we get from Hollywood.Jordan Wellinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05535960815468777121noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14812333.post-47734567459222789312013-06-07T10:09:28.503-05:002013-06-07T10:09:28.503-05:00This movie is so much better than Lola Versus, it&...This movie is so much better than Lola Versus, it's not even funny.

I quite liked it myself, but I am 28 and live in Washington Heights and am an artistic type. And I don't know, I thought the movie was pretty hard on Frances. I loved her, I was rooting for her, but I didn't let her off the hook for any of her behavior, and I don't think the movie did either.franklinshepardhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13858074176921317138noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14812333.post-83250069830134477122013-06-07T00:12:58.882-05:002013-06-07T00:12:58.882-05:00The weirdest thing about this is that Greta Gerwig...The weirdest thing about this is that Greta Gerwig already starred as a struggling, aimless, twenty-something Manhattanite the year before in "Lola Versus."

So when I heard about this film, I almost did a double take. Again? And with Lena Dunham's work in the past year, who could possibly think we need more of this demographic in any medium.hayleyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01203127598513280855noreply@blogger.com
