Or do you think the current four in the official lineup are sufficient? I started watching this on DVD when I was 12, but I guess I was confused because I thought it was supposed to be a horror movie.

Anyway, can we get a review of the Blair Witch project? I saw that at a drive in when I was nine and honest to goodness I'm too scared to watch it again, even though I can't imagine its as scary as I think it is. Just a suggestion if you're going to do another summer of blood. I wonder what would have happened if Raimi and Campbell had managed to get out a (decent) Army of Darkness game before DN3D...

Thrash - Versus, man, that was a mainstay of my college days. Everyone I knew kinda had to watch it or be forever lame. I never did see the re-cut of it they did a few years ago... apparently Kitamura and some of the actors reshot scenes and touched up the CGI in places. It may not be the tightest film, but it's 2000 Japanese cool personified. NO... I SLEPT TOO LOOOOOOONG!" against the ravaged ruins of London is both arresting and really funny, given how disingenuous it is. Also, being the eternal optimist I am, I'd love to see a two-decades later sequel based on that ending. The Evil Dead by way of Mad Max? Count me the fuck in.

The theatrical ending is rich with pleasures itself though, so really, I'm mostly glad that both endings are available for our edification.

If you haven't seen it Tim, I would strongly reccomend checking out Ryuhei Kitamura's "Versus." It's a Japanese movie made in 2000, and is basically driving at the goofy feeling of Army of Darkness (although filtered through a few anime and Hong Kong heroic bloodshed tropes along the way), but made with the same DIY micro-buudget as The Evil Dead. It's production history is quite remarkable, given that it was made in an era when talented amateurs with something to prove don't generally tend to see the light of day. I consider it to be the true spiritual successor to the Evil Dead trilogy, much as I enjoyed Drag Me To Hell.Thrash Til' Deathhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01741491764040608276noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14812333.post-83794298990214579052013-04-29T05:03:22.135-05:002013-04-29T05:03:22.135-05:00I've only seen the theatrical cut (possibly th...I've only seen the theatrical cut (possibly the international one at that, I'm not sure which was on the Australian DVD), but I can't imagine the original ending possibly working as well. The final scene of Army of Darkness is possibly my favourite in the entire movie, and "hail to the king, baby!" one of the finest ending lines in history. And without that, what would the Duke Nukem games have shamelessly stolen for their character's catchphrase? One shudders to think.Chris Dhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07633087241215626035noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14812333.post-82653290037170439002013-04-29T04:40:09.365-05:002013-04-29T04:40:09.365-05:00This is, without a doubt, my favorite of the three...This is, without a doubt, my favorite of the three, and primarily due to the reasons Tim pointed out.

Granted, I was born in the late 80s, but grew up always watching 80s/early-to-mid-90s movies for the most part, and AoD was the first of the trilogy I saw.

Knowing nothing about Raimi or the legacy of the series, I went into ED2 expecting it to be like the threequel, and fucking hated it. With time, and after learning the behind-the-scenes info surrounding the films, I grew to love it, but it was a slow and arduous trek, taking me more than 10 viewings to fully digest.

The original I saw in my late teens, and it was fine. It's a fairly simple movie in terms of style, and one I didn't have any trouble "getting."

Not too long ago, I tried showing ED2 to my little sister, who's 15 now, and her friend, both of whom promptly didn't get it at all, called it corny and lame, and left me to watch it alone in mild disappointment. Hopefully she'll come around. At least I have shared the joys of Hellraiser, Nightmare, The Thing, The Fly, Videodrome and Dead Alive with her, all of which she thoroughly enjoyed.

It's something, I suppose. Hopefully Raimi and Campbell never end up making a fourth. I don't think it's possible for it to turn out to be anything other than a massive disappointment. Drag Me to Hell was a kind of spiritual successor, anyway.

Where are these young, talented auteurs with something to prove nowadays?
