And I'm obviously in the minority in finding Brad Pitt's performance just annoying. But I love Madeline Stowe's performance. For me she really provides the emotional entry into the film; and it's absolutely heartbraking/wonderful when she makes eye contact with the boy at the end. Love it!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00518246019176882665noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14812333.post-55071736465054003422012-12-20T03:46:57.304-06:002012-12-20T03:46:57.304-06:00I saw this movie two or three times in college, an...I saw this movie two or three times in college, and loved it. My roommate owned it, if I remember rightly. Then 6 or 7 years went by without me seeing it. It was in the 5 dollar bin at Wal-mart, I bought, went home, opened it up, and stuck it in... a dvd folder where it has now sat for over a year, unwatched. Why? Not sure, but I just never seem to have the desire to revisit it, despite thinking it was really great.

I do not wish to sidetrack this thread into a discussion on Gilliam in general, but if someone else did, I would probably spend a fair amount of time bitching about how The Brothers Grimm took one legit great actor, one really good one, and a director I love, and somehow wound up being fucking terrible.Brianhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04546972990126033036noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14812333.post-66406397805272987792012-12-19T23:18:29.837-06:002012-12-19T23:18:29.837-06:00Apocalypse Week hit an unexpected snag - had a &qu...Apocalypse Week hit an unexpected snag - had a "Natural Disaster" and "Man-Made Disaster" film in the pipeline, and it turned out that the Natural Disaster was, though the magic of third-act twists, also a Man-Made Disaster. Not certain yet if I'm just going to write them both up - having sunk the time into The Core, I certainly want something to show for it - or what I'd replace it with.

That said, I want to do another zombie thing in April (I skipped '12), and I think Snyder's Dawn would be a better fit there.

You are right, I am retrospectived all to hell, but I couldn't let this week go by without something to commemorate it.Timhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09491952893581644049noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14812333.post-12314473722470636742012-12-19T22:19:54.266-06:002012-12-19T22:19:54.266-06:00Dare I hope that there will be a "death by zo...Dare I hope that there will be a "death by zombies" day in which you finally review Zack Snyder's Dawn of the Dead? Given how much you HATE Snyder's guts but have admitted you love the movie, I'm dying to read what you have to say.

I'm loving this surprise apocalypse retrospective, and I loved your Tolkien retrospective, and I loved your Bond retrospective. There's very little to focus on for mass/blockbuster appeal, except for who is in it. I don't remember trailers for The Fisher King but I'm going to go out on a limb and assume there was a lot of Robin Williams being crazy, because that was a big deal at that time. And the 12 Monkeys ad I remember most had no clips from the film: It was an organ grinder talking about BRAD PITT! and BRUCE WILLIS! and how his monkey was missing (THE FILM HAS NO MONKEYS!). I tried to find it, but YouTube and Google have failed me. But at the time, Brad Pitt and Bruce Willis were a very big deal. This technique almost worked for The Brothers Grimm. A lot of people bought tickets for MATT DAMON! and HEATH LEDGER!, and then returned them once they found out what they were getting into. And so on after that. Had something taken place in La Mancha, I'm sure I'd also be mentioning Johnny Depp. I never saw any advertising for Tideland. I may look that up right now, because I can't even imagine how someone would try to spin that.Rebeccahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06316541604903436175noreply@blogger.com
