LES VACANCES
Once again, it's time for my post-Festival unwind; and this time I'm even taking a proper vacation, and not just a blogging vacation. And such a good week I've picked - eleven new films opening in Chicago this week! A healthy number of them are Oscar contenders! I'm not really interested in more than two of them!
I'm (idiotically) hoping to see as many of these as possible, although I expect it will be some three weeks and the closure of half of them before I get caught up. Meanwhile, I wanted to toss this out to you my audience: which of the following films would you be most interested in seeing reviewed? I'm not looking for "recommendations" per se - I have a pretty clear sense which of these are going to be awful and which will only be mostly dull - just want to see what you care about. Because it's all about you, beloved readers.
-30 Days of Night
-Broken
-The Comebacks
-Gone Baby Gone
-Ira and Abby
-Lars and the Real Girl
-My Kid Could Paint That
-Rendition
-Reservation Road
-Sleuth
-Things We Lost in the Fire
-We Own the Night (opened on the 12th, but I still plan on seeing it)
Fortunately, the following weekend looks a great deal simpler: Dan in Real Life and...fuck fuck FUCK.
Back on Monday the 29th - maybe Sunday the 28th, but that's probably not the smart money.

Just a few rules so that everybody can have fun: ad hominem attacks on the blogger are fair; ad hominem attacks on other commenters will be deleted. And I will absolutely not stand for anything that is, in my judgment, demeaning, insulting or hateful to any gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or religion. And though I won't insist on keeping politics out, let's think long and hard before we say anything particularly inflammatory.
Also, sorry about the whole "must be a registered user" thing, but I do deeply hate to get spam, and I refuse to take on the totalitarian mantle of moderating comments, and I am much too lazy to try to migrate over to a better comments system than the one that comes pre-loaded with Blogger.
I am REALLY fascinated to see your take on Gone Baby Gone... As I think I've told you, the more people write about it, the more curious I get. And who doesn't want to hear what you have to say about the Ryan Gosling inflatable-doll comedy? The only other one that I want to at least hear your take on is Sleuth, which might be unremarkable in the extreme, but god dammit do I ever want it to be interesting...
ReplyDeleteGone Baby Gone, Lars and the Real Girl, and My Kid Could Paint That. the rest, couldn't care less.
ReplyDeleteI'm interested in your take on the above-mentioned films and Rendition. It seems like one of those films that's just going to choke, and choke hard on its good intentions. I'm interested to hear whether it does.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I'm mad curious about Gone Baby Gone, but I also want to hear about Rendition, Lars and the Real Girl, and Sleuth.
ReplyDeleteAs for My Kid Could Paint That, I saw it already, and I recommend it, so you should see it. As far as writing about it, you'll know when you see it if you need to write about it or not... it could go either way.
...and I trust we'll be getting a Saw IV review?
ReplyDeleteI actually read a good review of Reservation Road and that makes me curious. I don't trust the source, but it makes me curious.
ReplyDeleteAlong with all the other stuff everyone else has already asked for.
I was excited about you tearing 30 days of night a new one, what with Josh Hartnett and what seems to be some pretty unfertile ground for a script... but now it's getting somewhat good reviews, so I think it'll end up mostly a joyless venture for you. Likewise I'd recommend my kid could paint that, but I wouldn't rush out to see it.
ReplyDeleteSo, keep your hand on the plow and plow through that oscar fodder. (hold on!)
