By now I suppose that most of you will have heard about the terrible events of last night, at a screening of The Dark Knight Rises in Colorado.

There will be a lot of hand-wringing over this in the next few days, I am certain, so for right now, I'm keeping it simple: this was a ghastly tragedy, and the victims and their families are in my thoughts & have my deepest sympathies. Talking about the movie will wait for another time; right now I'm putting up this post as the blogging version of a moment of silence.

  1. Woke up and read the story - horrifying. My condolences to the families of all involved.

  2. Depressed. Outraged. My condolences to the families of the victims. That could have been any of us last night. I don't know if I can ever look at these films the same way again.

  3. How is it horrifying or shocking? It's going to keep happening, and no one that could ever be in the position to, will ever be willing enough to change the system that allows it to happen, since it's so tied in to America's psyche and narrative.

Forgetting about it until the next one happens in 5 months is everyone's fault, on the other hand. The people have chosen that it's an acceptable price to pay.

Just a few rules so that everybody can have fun: ad hominem attacks on the blogger are fair; ad hominem attacks on other commenters will be deleted. And I will absolutely not stand for anything that is, in my judgment, demeaning, insulting or hateful to any gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or religion. And though I won't insist on keeping politics out, let's think long and hard before we say anything particularly inflammatory.

Also, sorry about the whole "must be a registered user" thing, but I do deeply hate to get spam, and I refuse to take on the totalitarian mantle of moderating comments, and I am much too lazy to try to migrate over to a better comments system than the one that comes pre-loaded with Blogger.
