OSCAR VOTING

You have, undoubtedly, heard that there's an Oscars happening next weekend. And for no special reason beyond "why not?" I'm going to review an old Best Picture winner as part of my super-informal mission to, at some point, end up with a piece on each and every winner somewhere on this blog.

Also for no special reason beyond "why not?" I decided to make it a fun, interactive thingy, and instead of just picking a film on my own, I'd lay it open to a vote. And so I've picked one film per decade, spanning a whole gamut of genres and quality, and thrown a poll up on the sidebar. Go, direct my fate!

  1. I really hope Chicago doesn't win because I get sort of bummed when you write those detailed less than enthused analyses of films I like which you don't care for :/

Although, I don't know what you think of The Sting (which I like) and I voted for that because it's the only one I think I have zero idea what you think of and it's one of those Best Picture winners people seem to have nothing to say about - good or bad.

  2. I voted for Dances with Wolves for no other reason than that it would probably be really funny. That is all.

  3. Rebecca is the best of those winners, so I chose that one.

  4. I'm with Dr. Faster. Dances with Wolves gets my vote. It's not a bad movie at all really, it's just not on par with good fellas. I recently watched the first hour of Rebecca so if it wins it'll promp me to watch the second. I'm torn.

  5. On The Waterfront is literally my favorite movie ever made, and Marlon Brando anchors it with the single greatest performance I have ever witnessed.

Plus, Elia Kazan's evilness gives it by far the most interesting back story to delve into.

  6. Yeah, but... but I just bought the new Grand Hotel Blu-Ray.

  7. As much as I would love to see you interview Dances with Wolves, I'm glad to see Rebecca gaining traction. Andrew shares my reasoning for why I would decidedly not like to see Chicago take the win.

  8. And by interview, I clearly mean review. Damnit Freud.

  9. And my impassioned, slightly well-reasoned argument for the On The Waterfront has failed.

FINE. I'll just watch it by myself.

    :)

Man, I haven't watched The Sting since college. On VHS.

Just a few rules so that everybody can have fun: ad hominem attacks on the blogger are fair; ad hominem attacks on other commenters will be deleted. And I will absolutely not stand for anything that is, in my judgment, demeaning, insulting or hateful to any gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or religion. And though I won't insist on keeping politics out, let's think long and hard before we say anything particularly inflammatory.

Also, sorry about the whole "must be a registered user" thing, but I do deeply hate to get spam, and I refuse to take on the totalitarian mantle of moderating comments, and I am much too lazy to try to migrate over to a better comments system than the one that comes pre-loaded with Blogger.
