BEAUTIFUL LOSERS
I didn't mention it last month, because oops, but one of the perks of being a regular contributor to The Film Experience is getting to partake in a group Top 10 the first Tuesday of every month. This time around, it's the 10 best Best Actress Oscar nominees who didn't win, and while it is a little bit consensus-ey in terms of its creativity, it's still fun, and you should go check it out.
Because I view every word that drops from my keyboard as too precious to waste, I though I'd also share, sans commentary, the list I submitted:
1. Gena Rowlands, A Woman Under the Influence
2. Celia Johnson, Brief Encounter
3. Barbara Stanwyck, Double Indemnity [on the TFE list]
4. Anne Bancroft, The Graduate
5. Brenda Blethyn, Secrets & Lies
6. Laura Linney, You Can Count on Me
7. Ingrid Bergman, Autumn Sonata
8. Michelle Williams, Blue Valentine
9. Judy Garland, A Star Is Born [on the TFE list]
10. Irene Dunne, Love Affair
Just missed the cut (chronologically)
Gloria Swanson, Sunset Blvd. [on the TFE list]
Edith Evans, The Whisperers
Jessica Lange, Frances
Meryl Streep, The Bridges of Madison County
Kate Winslet, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind [on the TFE list]

Just a few rules so that everybody can have fun: ad hominem attacks on the blogger are fair; ad hominem attacks on other commenters will be deleted. And I will absolutely not stand for anything that is, in my judgment, demeaning, insulting or hateful to any gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or religion. And though I won't insist on keeping politics out, let's think long and hard before we say anything particularly inflammatory.
Also, sorry about the whole "must be a registered user" thing, but I do deeply hate to get spam, and I refuse to take on the totalitarian mantle of moderating comments, and I am much too lazy to try to migrate over to a better comments system than the one that comes pre-loaded with Blogger.
Still can't believe we got two all-time best leading actress performances in Hollywood history in 1950(Swanson in Sunset Blvd, Davis in All About Eve) and BOTH of them lost.
ReplyDeleteAnd Laura Linney was robbed!
Swanson & Davis lost because not only did they split the vote, but Anne Baxter threw herself into the mix.
ReplyDeleteHowever, no Garbo on your list Tim?
Davis and Swanson lost because more people voted for Holiday. End of story. No vote-splitting.
ReplyDeleteI will take a double helping of #5 on your list, please, Tim. Blethyn's performance is so genuinely neurotic, it makes me anxious just watching it.
ReplyDeleteDamn, I've not been in these parts in a while - apologies.
ReplyDeleteNow that I think of it I'm SHOCKED Jessica Lange didn't make the top 10, she didn't make mine either but I was sure she'd be the winner.
You and I intersect on Judy and Brenda. Her line reading of, "You gotta laugh, ain't ya sweetheart? Else you'd cry" is one of my favourite line-readings ever and it's so a great performance. (I'm genuinely fond of all five of those nominees that year, even if the eventual winner is likely my #5).
In re: 1950, that was such a great slate all-around. I'd have personally voted for Swanson, but any one of them would have ended up in the top third of all-time winners. If it was vote splitting, it is not vote splitting that bothers me.
ReplyDeleteIn re: Brenda Blethyn, I'm so peeved she didn't make the top 10. Not surprised, just peeved.
In re: Lange, surprised and a little peeved.
Also, no need to apologise about not visiting lately, just glad to see you back.
