DAYS OF BLOGGING
Here's a weird and perhaps overly-fussy milestone, but one that I liked too much to pass it by: as of this date, 15 June, 2013, I have been operating Antagony & Ecstasy for exactly one-quarter of my life. It's obviously become a bigger part of me than I'd ever intended at the start, and I want to thank all my readers, whether you comment or not, for being part of this community that has meant such a lot to me for such a long time. I look forward to many more years of this, and I hope you do too.

Just a few rules so that everybody can have fun: ad hominem attacks on the blogger are fair; ad hominem attacks on other commenters will be deleted. And I will absolutely not stand for anything that is, in my judgment, demeaning, insulting or hateful to any gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or religion. And though I won't insist on keeping politics out, let's think long and hard before we say anything particularly inflammatory.
Also, sorry about the whole "must be a registered user" thing, but I do deeply hate to get spam, and I refuse to take on the totalitarian mantle of moderating comments, and I am much too lazy to try to migrate over to a better comments system than the one that comes pre-loaded with Blogger.
Congratulations!
ReplyDeleteChecking this blog has been a daily ritual for me for nearly two years now, and I hope it's been as rewarding for you to write as it has been to read.
I first discovered this blog, Tim, back around late 2009 when you were just starting your Disney marathon. At the time, I had just gotten past the "CHILDREN'S MOVIES SUCK" age and was rediscovering just how much I love Disney. I noticed on Rotten Tomatoes how you were reviewing several of them, and I started reading your reviews. Whereas most critics these days only write a few paragraphs of write reviews that feel more like cold academic essays, I was instantly struck by how obvious it was that you loved writing about these movies. Your endless sarcasm when you dislike a movie and your well-thought out praise about why a good movie is, indeed, a good movie quickly made me a regular to your blog. And then I discovered that your Summer of Blood marathons and I was hooked for life. You are my favorite movie critic. I read just about everything you write, and you have introduced me to several movies which I have enjoyed, such as the 1934 version of Les Miserables, which is a masterpiece.
ReplyDeleteSo, Tim, congratulations on years of successful movie blogging, and thank you for all of it.
Well, shit, this wasn't supposed to go up yet. I seem to have messed up scheduling something. Thanks for the nice words, and now everybody ignore this until Saturday afternoon!
ReplyDeleteIt was just the other day my mind was thoroughly blown when I realized that I've been reading this blog pretty much daily since late 2007, early 2008. It was the summer of blood marathons for me. I was on Rotten tomatoes looking up all the slashers I watched as a teen and I realized the same guy was writing hilarious reviews about the Friday the 13th movies (especially pat V). Keep up the good work man.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations Tim!
ReplyDeleteI don't know when exactly I started reading your blog (I think it was in the spring of 2011) but ever since I first landed here, I've been religiously checking it daily. You are my favorite reviewer and in my opinion, the best I've seen, the reason being because no other reviewer/critiquer marries so well actual film theory and knowledge with a viewer's perspective. Plus, your figurative, witty writing makes it that more interesting to read.
So thank you for all your hard work so far. Keep it up!
It's Saturday night where I am just now, so that makes it OK for me to stop ignoring this post. Woohoo on the whole quarter of your life so far spent on one blog, that's a major achievement. Especially to have got this far without any apparent burnout (that I can see, at least).
ReplyDeleteStill the first place I visit after I watch any movie!
ReplyDeleteYou're the one critic I go to after I see a movie.
ReplyDeleteNow, if you could just post your Before Midnight review!
Thank you for putting on a great site! You are one of the only personal sites I still visit on a daily basis, (along with Batman on Film and Scott Floman's Rock and Soul Music Reviews). Love the Summers of Blood and Disney retrospectives the most but I enjoy reading almost everything you write! While we don't always agree (I love the Scream films much more then you do for instance) I still respect your opinion and it's always entertaining!
ReplyDeleteI read a lot of great critics and movie blogs. This is my absolute favorite(in the wake of Roger Ebert's death). I hope you never stop writing and stop loving cinema.
ReplyDeleteYour posts are fantastic. Happy anniversary!
ReplyDeleteI'm a film student, and I've been reading your blog for a couple years now, and I've learned a lot more about movies from your posts than a couple of my film classes.
ReplyDeleteSo all I can say is thank you for pursuing your passions, and obviously it has impacted a lot of people for the better so congratulations. Not many people can say that about themselves.
I'm not sure I have anything to add to the effusive praise, but I too ended up here thanks to RottenTomatoes and I check in daily and get excited to see a new review. I don't post a bunch because I don't have much technical knowledge of filmmaking and I don't want to make posts saying "it was bad because I didn't like it", but I do learn a lot from reading your posts--especially the Disney retrospective.
ReplyDeleteAnd I'd like to add that you're one of the few critics whose positive reviews I enjoy as much as their negative ones. Anyone can tear something down, but it's a rarity to find someone who can express their praise without patting themselves on the back or bootlicking or just plain getting boring.
After reading you for a year, I'm still amazed by your ability to write intelligent and engaging essays and reviews on everything from Dreyer to Disney and Fulci. Keep up the good work!
ReplyDeletehappy anniversary! I love your film blogs so much, you're a great writer and many people including myself love your passion for film. but above all else your a kind and intelligent person. I hope you continue your passions and dreams and I wish you the best in life!
ReplyDeleteSincerely,
Moses Falcon
I love your writing and check out what you have said about every movie I see! Thanks for all your hard work.
ReplyDeleteThe internet would surely be a sadder place without this blog. Thanks for everything Tim!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on the milestone, Tim! This is one of my top fave sites on the web, and I love your "summer of blood" series, and all the rest of your features. Here's looking forward to your "holy shit I've been blogging for half my life!!" anniversary!
ReplyDeleteYour Disney reviews actually inspired me to go back to school for an animation degree. Just finished my first year. =) Thanks for writing, you are literally an inspiration.
ReplyDeleteI've been a loyal reader (though I don't always comment much) since you explained to me why watching Fired Up! was such a baffling experience. I've reread the Disney-thon multiple times, which may say a lot about me as well as how awesome it is.
ReplyDeletePlease keep writing about movies. It's always a joy.
Aw heck, thanks everybody. I do this because I love it, but it gets a lot easier to love it when I know that so many people actually give a damn about what I write. You're all way too nice.
ReplyDeleteSince everyone's saying what their entry point to your blog was, I'll say that mine was your review of Good Luck Chuck - probably the most hateful movie I've ever seen then (2007?) and now, and I was delighted to find someone who hated it as much as I did and could express why much better than I could. More importantly, though, this blog was what introduced me to the very concept of filmmaking as art, and got my 17-year-old self thinking about the texture and construction of movies - and introduced me to many films that today I wouldn't be without for anything. So thanks very much for all that.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your consistent excellence. You are my go to guy for movie reviews and opinions.
ReplyDeleteCongrats, Tim! I've loved and learned so much from this blog since I stumbled upon it in the midst of the very first summer of blood, and the insight, inventiveness and passion you consistently display whether you're writing about shitty '80s horror flicks, Disney animation, time-tested classics or new releases. Thank you so much for Antagony & Ecstasy - cinephilia is that much better for it.
ReplyDeleteIt's a genuine pleasure to read what you write on this site, Tim. Even when your opinion differs from mine, you're a paragon of responsible and rigorous criticism, and it's not an exaggeration to say you've influenced my own writing.
ReplyDeleteI'm so happy I stumbled across your beautifully scathing review to M. Night Shyamalan's The Last Airbender. My being able to discover this blog is, no doubt, the one good thing that came out of that movie's creation.
ReplyDeleteNo, but seriously, it's always so much fun (and so educational) to read your reviews; your passion is clearly visible and really infectious. Thanks for running such a quality blog, sir. It is nice to have a favorite reviewer on whom I can rely for humor, in-depth analysis, and incisive critiques in equal part.
Also, your Twitter is still the Actual Best Thing.
My entry point was (of all the damn things) the Leprechaun series, but I'm glad I stuck around. And I spread the love to at least three other people, so you owe me, Tim lad. :P
ReplyDeleteI don't recall when I first started reading your blog, but it's been a daily stop ever since. There's nothing more to say that others haven't already said. Simply put: you're the best movie blog I've ever run across.
ReplyDeleteI could ape what others on here have said and talk about how you're hilarious and fair and intelligent and always entertaining with your criticism, BUT I would like to mostly say that you're one of the most gracious bloggers I've run across.
So allow me to get personal: It was a personal highlight of my blogging life when you decided to link to my blog in your Terror Train piece. But the big one for me was when you participated in my humble Italian Horror blogathon (and the fact that you continue to support the blogathon honors me even more) four years ago (has it really been that long?).
I know that I've certainly been influenced by what you've written on here, so it was really special for me to have you participate in something I was so excited about. And it was especially cool for me considering that I was really never expecting people to be interested in an Italian Horror blogathon hosted by my little 'ol blog, and I am almost 100% positive that the majority of my traffic that time of the year comes via your blog.
Anyway, congrats and thanks for all of the great posts over the years, and for all that you've done to support my blog (and other people's blogs, too) and the way you've encouraged me to keep blogging.
Oh man, Tim's review of "The Last Airbender" is a shining, glorious thing of beauty.
ReplyDeleteI can't even
Weird. I totally commented on this post yesterday but now I can't seem to find my comment... Oh well, here's another.
ReplyDeleteThanks for all the years of great reviews, Tim! I've been reading since your Star Trek review in '09. I've checked this blog multiple times everyday since then. You and the FilmCritHulk are the only movie opinions I bother with anymore.
Keep writing 'em and I'll keep reading, also I'm still ready to buy the shit out of a book of your Disney Retrospectives. Kickstart that shit!
Not much that I can add here except to say congrats! A new Tim Brayton review is something I look forward to every day. Here's to a happy quarter, and best wishes for the eventual happy half.
ReplyDeletePleasure's all ours, Tim. You're the only critic I read regularly, so may you have many productive and fulfilling years of blogging to come!
ReplyDeleteTim, you are my favorite critic. This blog is the first place I come after I watch a film, hoping that I'll have your take to read. I wish I could write as well as you do. Thanks for being awesome.
ReplyDeleteI almost never comment but shoot, Tim, I've been reading this blog since the summer of 2009 and have turned at least two or three of my friends into regular readers as well. I even read your reviews on movies I never intend to see (mostly horror/slasher films and Disney sequels) because your writing's consistently so entertaining and insightful. I hope you keep up the good work for a very long time—and I also hope you never get syndicated, because some of your best sentences are the ones with the most imaginative swears.
ReplyDeleteRegular reader since 2010! Keep up the good work!
