THE THANKSGIVING POST
Having a commemorative day always makes it feel a lot less gooey and sentimental to do this kind of thing, but it applies every single day of the year: I am truly thankful to have all of, my readers, without whom there'd be no point to my doing this charming nonsense that I do. And I like doing this nonsense. All this seems especially important to say at a time like this, when my IRL job has been handing my ass to me pretty much nonstop ever since halfway through the Film Festival back in October, and there have been times when keeping up with the blog has been a bit more of a pain that a pleasure. But knowing that people are reading and, for whatever absurd reason, like what I put out there takes a lot of the bite out of it, and so I say again, and simply: thank you for reading my blog. I'm so very glad to have you here.
Happy Thanksgiving. Even if you're not an American. I'm still thankful for you.
Now, back to your irregularly-scheduled daikaiju eiga.

Just a few rules so that everybody can have fun: ad hominem attacks on the blogger are fair; ad hominem attacks on other commenters will be deleted. And I will absolutely not stand for anything that is, in my judgment, demeaning, insulting or hateful to any gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or religion. And though I won't insist on keeping politics out, let's think long and hard before we say anything particularly inflammatory.
Also, sorry about the whole "must be a registered user" thing, but I do deeply hate to get spam, and I refuse to take on the totalitarian mantle of moderating comments, and I am much too lazy to try to migrate over to a better comments system than the one that comes pre-loaded with Blogger.
Awww, I'm thankful for you too. Always look forward to reading your reviews of movies I'm interested in, and I'm especially excited to read your thoughts on Frozen. Keep up the good work.
ReplyDeleteYou are, by far, my favorite movie critic on the internet. I check this website every day, and for some crazy reason, there's almost always multiple, lengthy, well-reasoned new content for me to read. Just know that we're all very grateful for your continued writing on cinema.
ReplyDeleteHell, next pay day in December, I'm gonna remember to put $10 in your tip jar, and I don't think I've ever donated to anything before.
To quote a friend: "Happy Thanksgiving, Americans! Better late than never, I guess."
ReplyDeleteBut I agree with Jeremy: favourite film critic since Ebert died. :) Always interesting, often educational, brilliantly written, I read everything on here, even the 6/10 reviews of unsubtitled Kurdish art films I know I'll never get the opportunity to see, let alone actually want to watch. Kudos.
Tim, I grapple with writing four reviews a month for a blog in my spare time. Watching you turn 'em out day after day at such a consistent level of wit and insight is an inspiration. The giving of thanks goes both ways, believe me.
ReplyDeleteToday I took my daughter to see Frozen, and as soon as I returned home read your TFE post.
ReplyDeleteMy wife saw me and said "Ah, reading the review, even better than seeing the movie."
Many times it's true, and every movie is better when I get to read your review afterwards.
Thank you!
I'm a calarts animation student, so I got into your blog when you started up your Disney retrospective, which I really do consider to be the best thought through consideration of the artistic merits of each entry of the Disney canon.
ReplyDeleteFrom there this blog has been one of the most important gateways into proper cinephilia for me. I've always been into film, but you'd feel fucking ashamed to know how much influence you've had on how I go about thinking about cinema. Thanks for that though.
Aww. You're all way too sweet.
ReplyDeleteWell thank you for putting out such a quality blog! Truly you are one of the last sites that is not a commercial site like Amazon that I actually visit on a daily basis!
ReplyDeleteI hope it's not too late to throw in with everyone else - I check back here daily and read just about everything you have to say, and your writing has had a profoundly beneficial effect on my understanding and appreciation of film, and I'm profoundly grateful for that.
ReplyDeleteAnd in this film criticism age of offensively tiny critical reviews, thanks for being the best place for film reviews that are as long as we need them to be.
ReplyDeleteI say sincerely and without guile, you're the first voice I seek out on a new movie not because we'll always agree but because you'll explain your stance clearly.
(Also thanks for the way you tag your posts which sometimes is as delicious as reading the reviews.)
Pretty much what every one else has said. Thank you for always providing such amazing and consistently brilliant, insightful content...for FREE, mind you. This is one of my daily stops, and I always look forward to it. And even though I may not comment on everything, it doesn't mean that I'm not learning something from what you've written (the latest Review All Monsters series is a prime example of this).
ReplyDeleteHope you had a good Thanksgiving, Tim.
Thank you for the best one-man blog in the internet. The quality of the writing on its own would make me a regular visitor. The insight, elucidation and warmth offered to the films you love would make me an enthusiast. To cover such a huge scope of cinema, across a vast span of time and geography, is simply humbling. There's always an A&E tab open in my browser. It's even inspired me, at a glacial pace, to begin some writing of my own.
ReplyDeleteI've been reading (and thinking) recently about the consequences of the information age on society (a subject that hasn't been taken up in too many films outside of fairly narrow concerns surrounding pornography or surveillance). Whenever I start to become more cynical, I only have to remember that I wouldn't be able to read you if the internet wasn't around, and I'm an optimist again.
I have donated in the past and intend to do so in the future when I have a stable income source.
Dear Tim,
ReplyDeleteIt stuns me that this blog isn't part of your IRL job -- you update it so regularly and with such devotion. It's always a huge pleasure to read. Many thanks for sharing it with us.
