SUMMER OF BLOOD: READERS' CHOICE, REDUX!

Week 10 of the 2014 Summer of Blood is already breathing down our necks, and it's time for another Reader's Choice week. It went pretty well the first time, so I'm going to keep all the same rules, WITH ONE CHANGE, so be sure to look at #6 below

1. Only one title can be nominated per Google/Blogger profile.

2. In addition to the title, copy+paste the IMDb link, though I won't ask anyone to noodle with the HTML to actually make the link live.

3. Please, make sure I haven't already reviewed it. If you submit a nomination for a film that I've reviewed, I'll discard it.

4. I will also discard any title I have planned for a future poll in this year's Summer of Blood. Don't feel bad - it'll have a better chance of winning later rather than now.

5. I'm going to allow a fairly free definition of horror, not limited by any particular subgenre. That said, if anyone throws out a clear joke title, I'll probably discard that too.

6. THE NEW RULE You can't re-nominate the film you nominated for Week 5! You can nominate the film that somebody else nominated, but I want to have this be at least a tiny bit more interesting than just standing around waiting for the vote deadline before I officially announce that I'm reviewing The Thing.

You have 48 hours - until 11:00 AM Central Daylight Time (GMT -5:00) on Friday, 18 July. Use the comments to this post to make your nominations!

  1. The Blair Witch Project! I think someone else nominated it last time, so consider this a renomination.

  2. Thank you Michael O'Malley!!!!

This time I'll throw my hat in for The Phantom of the Opera (1989)

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0098090/?ref_=nv_sr_4

It's awful, but unique for a slasher. My dad bought the DVD thinking it was the musical.

  3. I'd like to nominate [REC], for my money the best horror film of the last ten years.

  4. Well, seeing as how were playing with a loose definition of horror...

    Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975)

  5. Yes! I was looking forward to getting another shot at this, because after the poll was up last time, because I was kicking myself for not nominating a film I've wanted to see on this blog for years:

    Fuckin' PHENOMENA!

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0087909/?ref_=nv_sr_1

AKA The one film from Argento's golden age not yet on A&E, and seeing as he was passed over in favour of Fulci last week, I think he deserves his shot.

  6. You've already gone over the sequel, but I'd love to read your take on the film that kicked off the modern taste for fast zombies, 28 Days Later. Plus, there's the whole completionist aspect.

  9. Don´t know if it was nominated last time but since Criterion is about to release it why not the sublime The Innocents: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0055018/?ref_=nv_sr_1

  10. Atomic Dog (1998)
I saw this when I was ten years old and I still remember how horrible it was.

  11. Enemy (2013)

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2316411/

Just saw it and would love to see your opinion on it. Definitely some elements of horror here.

  12. I vote for Dead Ringers (1988) more a thriller than a horror but whatever.

  13. I could be boring and nominate Candyman, which was a close runner up last time, but instead I'll pick a Clive Barker movie that wasn't nominated at all:

    Nightbreed

  14. It might lean a little more towards fantasy than horror, but what the hell?

    The Company of Wolves (1984)

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0087075/?ref_=nv_sr_1

    ReplyDelete
  15. I nominate Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0105665/?ref_=nv_sr_2

I don't know if you are familiar with the Tv show but I think that reading your thoughts would be interesting either way.

  16. Your reviewing of Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon will be quite the crucible for my high school life when I was absolutely obsessed and in love with the movie. You've already done so for most of the horror movies I've seen and loved, so I'd like to see it done again.

  18. Student Bodies (1981)

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0083133/?ref_=nv_sr_2

An Airplane!-style parody of slasher films from that genre's very greatest year. It'll even save some trouble and calculate the body count for you.

  20. The House by the Cemetery

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082966/

Happened to catch this one completely blind a few years ago and was surprised by how effective I found it to be. "Dream logic" is overused but THbtC really did feel like a nightmare to me.

  21. I'm going with the granddaddy of all so-bad-it's-good movies: Plan 9 from Outer Space.

    Plan 9 from Outer Space

    I can't believe I didn't think of this before.

  24. I nominate (The?) Last House on Dead End Street. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0076295/

  25. I'd still love to hear your take on Kill List...

sting606, feel free to nominate something else if you see this.

  28. It stands no chance, but since I like playing this game you invented, here is Unrest; http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0453533/

  29. Since it has a sequel out this year and I remember some intriguing things being said about it when you did your Best of the Decade list, how about Wolf Creek:

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0416315/?ref_=nv_sr_2

  30. I nominated "War of the Worlds" last time, so I'll switch to "The Ring" (2002)-

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0298130/?ref_=nv_sr_2

The first and last time an American J-horror adaptation was a functional thing. (I think it's a better movie than the Japanese original.) I'm a bit surprised you haven't reviewed it yet.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I'll nominate an under-appreciated Bava feature : Lisa and The Devil.
    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt006886

I was torn between nominating this or the horrible recut version House of Exorcism, which is LIsa and The Devil recut with exorcism scenes added in to cash in on the success of The Exorcist.

  32. As the dude who nominated The Thing last time, Nightmare Before Christmas. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  33. Since others have sneakily NOT-nominated their previous offerings:

I'm quite dismayed to see that no-one has yet renominated

    Beyond the Black Rainbow

And yet I will gamely nominate

    The Thing

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0084787/

  34. Not Fenimore- Think think think think think...

    I'm going to allow it.

moviemotorbreath- I'm going to allow that too, if only in deference to the fact that it was at least made by Universal & thus has some continuity with the original films.

  35. Hey, that movie scared me more than The Amityville Horror. Admittedly, mostly that was because I don't believe in demon houses and do believe in oh God bugs bugs they're everywhere THEY'RE IN MY HAIR OH GOD, but still...

    Freaking Oogie Boogie.

  36. Lucky McKee's The Woman (2011)

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1714208/?ref_=nm_knf_i1

Is it backwoods horror/cannibalsploitation/torture porn/feminist horror? I'm interested to see how you process this.

  37. I'm going to second Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, but only if you've seen the show before. If you haven't, I vote for The Ring. Am I allowed to have that stipulation?

    ReplyDelete
  38. Huh, Blogger comments are most curious when they credit my first comment (the one nominating Behind the Mask) to the name sting606 and the second (the one nominating The Mummy to the name of my Wordpress blog MovieMotorbreath, but oh well.

  39. Can't think of anything that hasn't already been said, so I'll second Phenomena because it is so wonderfully, completely insane.

  40. Theatre of Blood

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0070791/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1

Vincent Price plays a ham Shakespeare actor who kills himself out of despair of savage reviews. When he survives the attempt, he gets revenge on the critics who scorned him, by killing them in ways taken from Shakespeare's plays. It's a delicious black comedy, but structured almost like a slasher, even though it pre-dates even the earliest of them by several years. Plus, Vincent Price delivering some of the greatest speeches ever written in high camp fashion.
