SUMMER OF BLOOD, WEEK 14 POLL: THE 21st CENTURY SLASHER

VOTING CLOSED - WINNER: BEHIND THE MASK: THE RISE OF LESLIE VERNON
NB Because I decided, "what the hell, might as well just buy the blu-ray", the review will be later than usual: look for it Tuesday or Wednesday
Thanks to everyone who voted!

We are almost to the end of this audience choice edition of the Summer of Blood, and our tour of the many corners of the slasher film throughout history. For this final slate of three blogger-chosen titles, we arrive near the modern day, as changing filmmaking techniques and audience tastes have forced the trite clichés of the classic slasher to remold itself in more self-aware, unconventional forms. Each of the following films attempts to address those changes in an entirely different way and with varying degrees of success, but all demonstrate that even the most rigidly formulaic styles can be flexible when the need arises.

Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon (2006)
From IMDb: "The next great psycho horror slasher has given a documentary crew exclusive access to his life as he plans his reign of terror."

Cry_Wolf (2005)
From IMDb: "When a young woman is found murdered, a group of local high school students decide to further scare their classmates by spreading online rumors that a serial killer called 'The Wolf' is on the loose."

Trick 'r Treat (2007)
From IMDb: "Four interwoven stories that occur on Halloween: An everyday high school principal has a secret life as a serial killer; a college virgin might have just met the one guy for her; a group of teenagers pull a mean prank; a woman who loathes the night has to contend with her holiday-obsessed husband."

  1. I feel like Behind the Mask is a shoo-in, but I have a great deal of affection for Trick 'r' Treat and I'd love to see it make it.

  2. I too am torn between Behind the Mask which spent a brief time as one of my favorite movies and Trick 'r' Treat which had been a consistent Halloween watch.

  3. I like Trick 'r' Treat just fine, but Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon is the best slasher film since Wes Craven's New Nightmare, and one of the five best ever made, period, and it doubles as being everything Scream's biggest fans claim that movie is.

    BTM all damn day.

  4. I know it has no chance of winning, but I'll write in Jeff Lieberman's Satan's Little Helper.

  5. Perhaps the logic of The Expendables 3 casting is that Kelsey Grammar, on the back of his signature role, is still viewed as slightly 'effete' and therefore an outsider not to be trusted. Yes, that's as offensive as it sounds. Wait, he is the villain isn't he? Otherwise apart from implied prejudice, he was just the Brett Ratner pick - you know, the other guy cos you've ran out of time.

  6. Hi, Tim!

Your blog has been on my regular reading list for years, but I'm not much of an internet presence, so I've never posted comments. That being said, I was absolutely giddy about this poll, because I'd love to read your review of any of these films. Thanks for the opportunity to vote, and thanks for all of your work, which has made brighter many of my days.

  7. Thanks for commenting! I totally get the impulse towards staying a lurker, that's what I do in most of my own internet adventures. But I'm glad you piped up this time, and I'll admit that I'm pretty giddy to review the winner, myself.

Just a few rules so that everybody can have fun: ad hominem attacks on the blogger are fair; ad hominem attacks on other commenters will be deleted. And I will absolutely not stand for anything that is, in my judgment, demeaning, insulting or hateful to any gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or religion. And though I won't insist on keeping politics out, let's think long and hard before we say anything particularly inflammatory.

Also, sorry about the whole "must be a registered user" thing, but I do deeply hate to get spam, and I refuse to take on the totalitarian mantle of moderating comments, and I am much too lazy to try to migrate over to a better comments system than the one that comes pre-loaded with Blogger.
