The Online Film Critics Society has announced our winners! And they map with alarming closeness to my own votes among the nominees, so I feel pretty good, with one huge exception: Rooney Mara is no more the "supporting" actress in Carol, than... argh, whatever.

Just a few rules so that everybody can have fun: ad hominem attacks on the blogger are fair; ad hominem attacks on other commenters will be deleted. And I will absolutely not stand for anything that is, in my judgment, demeaning, insulting or hateful to any gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or religion. And though I won't insist on keeping politics out, let's think long and hard before we say anything particularly inflammatory.
Also, sorry about the whole "must be a registered user" thing, but I do deeply hate to get spam, and I refuse to take on the totalitarian mantle of moderating comments, and I am much too lazy to try to migrate over to a better comments system than the one that comes pre-loaded with Blogger.

So I have to ask...what drove their decision to declare Rooney Mara's performance in Carol "supporting" if she's obviously a co-lead? Do they have a Mike-Huckabee-on-marriage view of these situations ("One male lead and one female lead ONLY!"), since they did the exact same thing to Jake Gyllenhaal in Brokeback Mountain? Are they trying to "play the game" with Oscar since that's where Harvey Weinstein's campaigning her and this is an attempt to boost her chances? What's the deal, here? It seems like the vast majority of people who've seen the film agree calling Therese a supporting character is BS yet only a tiny number of people have the courage to call this out.

ReplyDeleteI haven't seen the film yet so I may be embarrassing myself, but if they absolutely must call one of them a supporting part, shouldn't it be Kate Blanchett's? At least in the novel, Rooney Mara's Therese is the clear protagonist and POV character.

ReplyDeleteHallvarður Jón Guðmundsson- Wow, really? It's got to be because of the December preview, but I mean, damn, that's a sensitive filter.
Vilsal- I'd say that in the movie, Mara is the lead for the first hour, Blanchett for the second, but yeah, if we MUST pick one of them to go supporting, it's Mara that has the fuller overall arc and maybe even more screentime.
I shouldn't talk about how I voted, but I did use my "abstain" choice for Mara and Vikander (they have us rank all the nominees 1-5, it's not just a straight vote).
